All About The Dogs That Will Be Training For The 2006 Yukon Quest. The Toughest Dog Sled Race In The World.

This page is still being worked,  need a few more good pictures.

SPROCKET Age: 2 Weight 34 lbs.

Sprocket is a daughter of Ginger she has two sisters and four brothers. Sprocket is a leader but is young and still has alot to learn. As a puppy she was always much faster in development then the other pups she is still very mature for a 2 year old. She has run in the Carbon Hill and the Rondezvous Races in Whitehorse, so she hasn't much experince yet.

RUBBLE Age: 2 Weight: 34 lbs.

Rubble is a female and another of Gingers pups.  She is small like Pebbles but has impressed me with her talents in lead.  One thing that is a bonus with the smaller dogs is they always seem to stay healthy and have few if any injuries and you need fewer calories to keep them going. Which translates to a lighter sled, the down side is the ability to pull up the steep hills.  That is when my own physical conditioning helps,  I run up to twenty kilometers and keep myself fit during the summer months.  Endurance and the ability to keep thinking smart with very little sleep is crucial during long distance races.  Because I can't afford to loose any weight feeding myself will be just as big a challenge as feeding the dogs.

HOOPER Age: 2 Weight 31 lbs.

Hooper is another daughter of Ginger,  the three females in this litter are all on the small side.  Hooper is diffucult to get a decent picture of because she is always moving when out playing in the open space that the dogs get to run and play in.  I have a large and safe fenced area for the dogs to run and play in.  This keeps them happy, allows them to strectch out the muscles and keeps them some what fit during the off season. Socialization is important and builds a sense of teamwork in the kennel.  Play time is fun but come mid August when the morning hours cool off it is back to business and we put on our game face again.

GAIL Age: 4 Weight: 27 lbs

Gayle is the smallest dog that will be training for the Quest with me. She may even be the smallest dog to run the Quest, if she makes the team. Gayle only weighs 4 or 5 pounds more then my house dog, who is a  poodle cockerspaniel cross! That's ok though because she makes up for it in heart and in leading abilitys, she has so much evergy it's crazy!!! I call her my little handbag because when I hook her up at run time I carry her under my arm like a purse.

DOT Age: 4 Weight 44 lbs.

Dot is a new member of Baskerville Kennels.  She has been leading the team from time to time with Ginger at the start of this year and promises to be a strong member of the team.  She is shy but will warm up to anyone given time to get use to them.  As you can see in this photo she is very relaxed in her new home.

Delta Age 5 weight 34 lbs

Delta was my first hound dog, she is 1/8 hound. She is a very good girl, she has run both sprint and distance with me. I got her in 2002 in Fairbanks from Tony Blandford while I was ther for the Junior Yukon Quest. Her and Pebbles are best buds.

SKYE Age: 5 Weight: 46 lbs

Skye is a very new addition to my kennel, she's a sweety. She is a very good lead dog. I like her alot, I also have Skye's sister and brothers I have high hopes for all of them.

Abby Age 5 Weight 46 lbs.

Enjoying the lazy days of summer. Abby is a sister to Crief, Laird and Skye and the bunch of them are related to Ginger.

GIMLIE Age: 6 Weight: 47 lbs.

Out for a summer walk in the forest near home.  Gimlie is a happy, goofy female who enjoys to play with people, she does not under stand though just how strong she is and can knock you over in a flash. She has bright blue eyes that are very stunning, my dad says she looks and acts more like a male dog.  Last year Gimlie was not racing because she was recovering from surgery early in the training season.  A Raven (a large Yukon bird)  dropped a corn cob from the family compost pile in the dog yard, she swallowed it and her intestines became blocked (Ouch). Gimlie likes to eat, unfortunatly a little to much of a good thing can be bad for you!  She missed to many important training runs last year.  This year she hopes she makes the team and stays healthy.  Oh and by the way we no longer put corn cobs in the compost pile,  it could have been alot worse for Gimlie.  If you compost you may want to remember this and take this precatution with your dogs.

PEBBLES is now Age: 6 Weight: 32 lbs.

Pebbles is very small but has a big heart.  I raised her from a puppy and has been one of my main leaders ever since.  She may be small but her desire to please me is HUGE, big enough to finish the Yukon Quest 300 mile race last winter. Pebbles is a strong candidate for my Quest team even though she is small.  Her hair is as soft as rabbit hair and she always looks good.  In the business of dog care you would say she is a easy keeper, meaning little food is needed to maintain her.  Her one fault is she sometimes is not interested in eating when she is racing.  I have been working with her this summer to try and change this behaviour.  This picture was taken in Pelly Crossing, Yukon during the Yukon Quest 300 last year.  At the main check points along the race trail the dogs make comfortable beds in the straw provided to each musher's team.
